Students should be aware that estimates for the death total of the Reign of Terror vary widely, even among well-respected sources. Approximately 17,000 people were sentenced to die by revolutionary tribunals, and some scholars cite this number. However, for the larger death count of the Terror, historians generally add on two categories of people: those who died in prison during the terror (about 10,00012,000) and people executed without trial under civil war conditions, possibly another 10,00012,000.
